DO Bierzo

Bierzo Designation of Origin
In addition to producing a very significant number of excellent wines, the DO Bierzo has winemakers who are being closely watched for their cultivation and winemaking techniques. This small but important denomination has several of the most respected Spanish producers. Raúl Pérez, Losada, La familia Palacios and Cesar Márquez Pérez, just to name a few.

The Bierzo region is located in the northwest of the province of León, within the Autonomous Community of Castile and
Lion. Geographically it borders the provinces of Ourense, Lugo and Asturias and is a communication hub between Galicia, León and Asturias.
El Bierzo is characterized by having sloping terrain, ranging from 450 to 800 meters above sea level, whose hills are oriented to the four cardinal points.
The soil is based on Miocene materials covered by a Quaternary layer. The texture is silty-loamy, moderately acidic, with a pH close to 5.5 with no carbonates, typical of humid climates.
El Bierzo dates back to Roman times, when they promoted agriculture by introducing crops such as grapes.
After centuries of production and having achieved a certain reputation in the markets of Galicia and Asturias, the wines of Bierzo suffered a terrible blow at the end of the 19th century, when a phylloxera plague practically wiped out the vines.
El Bierzo produces different varieties of grapes. The production of wines covered by the DO must be carried out exclusively with the following varieties: Mencía, Garnacha tintorera, Godello, Doña Blanca, Palomino and Malvasia.
Mencía: Main red variety of Bierzo and represents 74.5% of the grapes grown in the production area.

Garnacha tintorera: Red variety and represents 2%. Also known as Alicante bouschet.

Godello: White variety. Represents 4%.

White Lady: White variety. It represents 2.4%. It is also known as Valenciana.

Palomino: White variety. Represents 17%. Also known as Jerez or Listán.

Malmsey: White variety. Represents 0.1%.
