This small but important denomination has several of the most respected Spanish producers. Ra\u00fal P\u00e9rez, Losada, La familia Palacios and Cesar M\u00e1rquez P\u00e9rez, just to name a few. \u00a0 <br \/><\/em><\/h4>\r\n<figure><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3466 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.internationalwinemore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Bolo-2014-de-Bodegas-Rafael-Palacios-Portada-A-Tavola-con-il-conte-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"Vi\u00f1edo Rafael Palacios \" width=\"608\" height=\"395\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h5>The Bierzo region is located in the northwest of the province of Le\u00f3n, within the Autonomous Community of<em> Castile and <\/em><\/h5>\r\n<h5><em>Lion.<\/em> Geographically it borders the provinces of Ourense, Lugo and Asturias and is a communication hub between Galicia, Le\u00f3n and Asturias.\u00a0<\/h5>\r\n<h5>El Bierzo is characterized by having sloping terrain, ranging from 450 to 800 meters above sea level, whose hills are oriented to the four cardinal points.<\/h5>\r\n<h5>The soil is based on Miocene materials covered by a Quaternary layer. The texture is silty-loamy, moderately acidic, with a pH close to 5.5 with no carbonates, typical of humid climates.<\/h5>\r\n<h5>El Bierzo dates back to Roman times, when they promoted agriculture by introducing crops such as grapes.<\/h5>\r\n<h5><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3474 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.internationalwinemore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/valdeorras-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"330\" \/><\/h5>\r\n<h5>After centuries of production and having achieved a certain reputation in the markets of Galicia and Asturias, the wines of Bierzo suffered a terrible blow at the end of the 19th century, when a phylloxera plague practically wiped out the vines.<\/h5>\r\n<h5>El Bierzo produces different varieties of grapes. The production of wines covered by the DO must be carried out exclusively with the following varieties: <em>Menc\u00eda, Garnacha tintorera, Godello, Do\u00f1a Blanca, Palomino and Malvasia.<\/em><\/h5>\r\n<h5><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Menc\u00eda: <\/strong><\/span>Main red variety of Bierzo and represents 74.5% of the grapes grown in the production area.<\/h5>\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3467 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.internationalwinemore.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Mencia-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h5><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Garnacha tintorera<\/span>: <\/strong>Red variety and represents 2%.
