Ilimitado is a schist-driven study of terroir soils in the Douro, independent of the grapes. This year, field blends of Cotas and Ervedosa do Douro grapes were sourced from the Corgo Peak, with vines between 35 and 60 years old, planted in Patamares and large terraces of 400-550 m, predominantly on clayey clays and yellow slate. The 40% grapes were whole-bunch fermented in Lagares, foot-trodden, with 8-10 days of maceration. The remaining 70% fermented whole-bunch in stainless steel tanks, with 20-30 days of maceration. Both lots were aged for 14 months in used French barriques. Bushy herbs, fragrant rockrose, wild blackberries, and juicy plums weave throughout the midpalate, undefined by finely grippy/schist tannins and lifted by the elevation, finishing with a ferrous kiss of graphite. A super-smart snapshot, drinking beautifully now and in the future.
